Born into an ecclesiastical family〔(Details of family )〕 and educated at Norwich School and Trinity College, Oxford“Who was Who”1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 he was ordained in 1935. After curacies at Tynemouth and Kingston, Jamaica he was successively the incumbent at Kessingland, Sprowston〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 and '' St Margaret’s King’s Lynn '' 〔(Church web site )〕 before becoming Archdeacon of Norwich in 1961, a position he held until his elevation to the Episcopate.
